Maternity clothing that is more than just comfort

Maternity clothing that is more than just comfort

I believe that clothing is meant to be more than just physical comfort. There is a lot of comfortable clothing available for women during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, and beyond. However, clothing should also be functional. Comfort does not always equate to function. When I refer to functional clothing, I mean clothing that remains comfortable over the long term. Something may be comfortable today, but that does not guarantee it will still be comfortable later. I have had clothes that only fit me for one or two weeks of the month because my size fluctuates with my cycle. I am one or two sizes bigger the week before and during my period than I am the week I am ovulating. Therefore, something can be comfortable, but if it is not consistently comfortable, it is not functional.

Functionality also includes practical features such as pockets. As a mother, I think about whether a dress allows me to breastfeed. Other functional aspects include dresses with detachable hems for different lengths. I have utilized this feature when wearing a longer dress throughout the day and then going on a bike ride with my kids. I can simply remove the hem, making the dress shorter and more appropriate for the activity. Additionally, if you prefer not to have ten dresses in your closet, you can transform a knee-length dress into a floor-length dress for a more formal event. That feels functional to me.

Another important aspect of clothing is the ability to feel good about oneself. We live in a society where women often feel extremely tied to their appearance, and we want to feel beautiful. This desire is not inherently bad; however, it becomes problematic when it overshadows our finances and time in ways that are unsustainable for our lifestyles. The fashion and beauty industries often create a never-ending cycle of striving for beauty as we age, change, and navigate different life stages.

Part of functionality is having beautiful items that can adapt to our changes without becoming a financial burden. We should not constantly need to buy new clothes because our sizes change, or feel pressured to purchase more makeup, skincare products, or beauty treatments to maintain our appearance. The products marketed to us are often designed to create the illusion of beauty rather than to enhance the beauty we already possess.

My goal with clothing is to empower women beyond mere comfort. I want my designs to support women in their lives, whether they are mothers, working professionals, or homemakers. I envision dresses that can be worn in the garden, at the office, or during playtime with children. I want these garments to be supportive of various lifestyles, making women feel beautiful throughout their daily responsibilities.

I want you to feel beautiful because you are beautiful. You should be able to open your closet and confidently choose something that fits well and makes you feel good, regardless of any weight fluctuations. If you gain a few pounds, you should still be able to wear the same outfit and feel just as good in it because it was designed for that purpose. We should not have to change ourselves to fit into our clothes; rather, our clothes should accommodate us.

Clothing is more than comfort; it embodies beauty and function. It should empower you throughout your day, not make you feel self-conscious or uncomfortable. You should be able to throw on an outfit, feel good, and carry on with your day. That is what I aspire to create for others.
